After being fired by the Raptors due to yet another damaging postseason exit at the hands of LeBron James and Cleveland Cavaliers, Dwane Casey has officially moved on to pastures new.The 61-year-old became the new head coach of the Detroit Pistons, Wednesday, being presented to the media after putting pen to paper on a five-year $36 million deal last week. Casey replaces Stan Van Gundy at the helm, after he too was fired this offseason, and he's already setting some pretty ambitious targets for his new team. Van Gundy's teams missed the playoffs in three out of his four seasons in charge, and Casey's first target is to see the glory days of Detroit basketball return sooner rather than later. The Pistons have only been to the postseason once in the past ten years, and owner Tom Gores is adamant that Casey is the right man to take them back to a championship level team. "He checked every single box," Gores said of Casey. "This is not a developmental job; it’s something (Casey) believes in.”It's clear that the new owner-coach duo share the same kind of ambition going forward too."Our time is now," Casey said. "The key is the summer for our young guys, with Stanley, Henry (Ellenson) and Luke [Kennard]."Whilst it's highly unlikely that Detroit will be a contender in the East next season, another strong offseason and draft haul could see them emerge as one of the better young teams in the conference. With a nucleus of promising young players as mentioned by Casey, and enough cap space to create the possibility of luring a star to play alongside Blake Griffin, the notion that playoff basketball will be back in Detroit soon should be taken seriously. They certainly won't be as good as 'The Bad Boys' nor the Chauncey Billups-led championship team of 2004, but they could become relevant with the right additions and coaching.

Casey also noted that he wants to instill many of his own qualities in his new team including 'being consistent, being a hard worker and being a leader'.

He has a stiff challenge on his hands to turn the Pistons back into a title challenger, but he's proven he can form a team that can go deep into the playoffs in his time in Toronto and will now be hoping to be able to make the leap with his new franchise that he was never able to with the Raptors.
