If there's one thing all WWE fans can agree on in the past couple of years, it's the fact that the prestige of the Intercontinental Title has been restored.

The Miz did a fantastic job with the strap over on SmackDown Live at the beginning of the brand split back in 2016 and his feud with Dolph Ziggler shone a spotlight on the belt that it hadn't enjoyed in years.

Seth Rollins took the baton from Miz at WrestleMania 34 in New Orleans during a triple-threat that also featured Finn Balor and the Kingslayer has been the hottest thing in the WWE in 2018 - period.

Operating as a fighting champion, Rollins has welcomed all challengers and defeated Elias at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view.

However, the very next night, Ziggler shocked the Architect to claim his sixth Intercontinental title on RAW leaving many fans to wonder why Elias didn't win the belt if the plan was for Rollins to drop it?

However, according to Dave Meltzer, the WWE's plans for Rollins are about to become a lot clearer.

“I mean it’s possible [he could win the title back] I don’t know," Meltzer said on the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Podcast. I kind of like the idea of him not winning the title back and going in that main event multiple-person match.”

“I think when they announced a multiple-person match I thought that was very good for Rollins because #1 he’s been the best guy so he would help the match and #2 he’s the hottest guy right now although Strowman’s pretty hot. But I think that it would be good for him to be in that match.”

THE PLOT THICKENS

Raw general manager Kurt Angle announced last Monday that there will be a 'multi-man match' for the right to be Brock Lesnar's next challenger - presumably at SummerSlam, though not confirmed - at Extreme Rules.

Roman Reigns and Bobby Lashley are the first two names in that match, but Rollins has dropped the IC title so he can join the match and thus, the Universal title hunt.

That's something WWE fans can really get behind and the former Shield man seems to be the general pick amongst the WWE Universe to dethrone Brock.

BAD NEWS

However, several reports have indicated that Roman Reigns is still the man the WWE want to dethrone Lesnar and given all of his near-misses, the natural culmination of his story is to overcome the odds.

That would mean a meteoric waste of Rollins when his IC title reign was supremely entertaining.

Braun Strowman is, of course, waiting in the wings with his Money in the Bank briefcase, but it seems like Rollins will earn the right to face Lesnar.
