You really had to feel sorry for Lionel Messi after Argentina’s opening World Cup game, didn’t you?

Messi, with the weight of a country on his shoulders, missed a penalty and failed to make a difference as Argentina drew 1-1 with Iceland.

Despite being one of the greatest players his country has ever produced, saving them on numerous occasions, Messi felt he had let the whole nation down.

After the disappointing draw, Messi admitted that he was “hurt” by his penalty miss.

"It hurts me to have missed the penalty, because it was the decisive advantage," Messi said.

"I feel responsible for not having been able to take the three points. I have no doubt that a goal from the penalty kick would have changed everything."

But there was plenty of people defending Messi - one of them being the great Diego Maradona.

He tried to comfort Messi by claiming he once missed five penalties in a row.

"I missed five penalties in a row and I was still Diego Armando Maradona," he said.

"The game and the two points lost by the team are not down to his penalty. He showed his face and gave everything he had to give. The "kid" did his duty.

"Seeing him on the field, he was pretty pissed off. Just like I would have been. It was all him, he always had to shrug two players off and when he did, there was no pass open."

And before Argentina kicked-off their second group match against Croatia, Maradona showed his support for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner once again.

He held a ‘Messi 10’ jersey out in front of him before giving it a massive kiss.

If Messi had looked up and seen that, he would certainly feel a bit of weight lifted off his shoulders, that’s for sure.

Whether Messi saw it or not, fans loved Maradona’s gesture - with some comparing it to Messi's famous celebration at the Bernabeu.
