On paper, Argentina against Croatia could be considered to be an even affair.

But it was far from it.

The match-up was truly men against boys as the European side absolutely dominated Jorge Sampaoli's men.

Willy Caballero gifted Croatia the lead in the 53rd minute, with his disastrous pass brilliantly capitalised on by Ante Rebic.

With Argentina out of sorts, and Lionel Messi struggling to impose himself on the game, they completely imploded in the last ten minutes.

Luka Modric scored a sensational goal ten minutes from time, before Ivan Rakitic completed the rout with minutes remaining.

Croatia have now qualified for the knockout stages, while Argentina are on the brink of an exit after accumulating just one point from their opening two games.

There were many sensational performances for Croatia.

Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic will perhaps get the plaudits, but another man who was brilliant throughout was Liverpool defender, Dejan Lovren.

The defender has been criticised for his performances in a red shirt, but he seems to have improved massively since Virgil van Dijk's signing in January.

And he was superb again on Thursday night as he contained Messi and Sergio Aguero for large periods of the game.

And Liverpool's official Twitter account posted one, perfect word to sum him up after the game: immense.

That describes his performance perfectly.

It was not just Liverpool's Twitter account that were praising Lovren, however.

Many Liverpool fans took to the social media platform to praise his performance, with some noting his improvement, for both club and country, since Van Dijk's signing.

There are some, however, that will still have their doubts about Lovren.

He has been impressive in the past few months, but he has shown in the past he has an array of errors to his game.

Jurgen Klopp may be tempted to buy a centre-back this summer to partner Van Dijk, but after Lovren's performance tonight, he may well be convinced not to.
