The Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks pulled off a shock late trade on draft night which saw them swap picks after they'd made their selections. The Mavs landed top European prospect Luka Doncic as they swapped their number five pick with the Hawks for the number three while also including a 2019 first-round pick in the deal. With the fifth pick, Atlanta acquired Trae Young, the player they'd always targeted in this draft. It's a huge coup for the Mavericks as they aim to rebuild and look for a future franchise player as veteran Dirk Nowitzki could be heading into his final season.Doncic is a real star in the making and was seen as a potential number one pick for much of the year. But he dropped to three as the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings chose Deandre Ayton and Marvin Bagley III, respectively.

Future face of the franchise

The Slovenian, however, is still regarded as arguably the most talented player in the draft as he arrives in the NBA with a stellar resume after his professional career with Real Madrid in Europe.

Unlike his fellow draftees, the 19-year-old is coming off a title-winning season where he led his team to both the Euroleague and Liga ACB championships.

He was named as the Euroleague MVP, the Euroleague Final Four MVP and Liga ACB MVP after a remarkable campaign.

Doncic arrives in the NBA as one of the most decorated players to make the move to the States and there has been a real anticipation for him to bring his talents onto the biggest stage.

He will now do that with Dallas and could fittingly take the reigns from the league's best European player of all time in Dirk, who immediately welcomed him to the team.

"[The Mavericks have] been talking to me," Doncic said on the broadcast after being selected, per ESPN. "They were so nice to me. And I'm glad, you know? Just happy to be in the NBA. Just happy to be a part of that.

"I mean, you know, I have a lot of ex-NBA players on my team. I've played against a lot of ex-NBA players, and I've had some great teammates. They taught me so much.

"Especially the NBA players, they've been talking to me about the NBA like this whole year ... they knew I was coming. So, I think I'm prepared."

The talented youngster can occupy either guard position and will form an exciting backcourt partnership with Dennis Smith Jr.

The future of the Mavs is in great hands and the fans in Texas have a lot to look forward to.
