In what proved to be a shocking title change this week on Monday Night RAW, Dolph Ziggler defeated Seth Rollins to become the new Intercontinental Champion.
The Kingslayer's open challenge came to a sudden halt after Elias' failed attempt the previous night at Money in the Bank, and with rumours suggesting The Drifter could become the new champion down the line, the result on RAW did come as a surprise.
NEW CHAMPION
Following the loss, Rollins was beaten down by The Show and ate the Zig-Zag - Claymore Kick combination, but the majority of fans were excited about the future rather than staying upset about the defeat.
This all seemed to revolve around The Architect being elevated into the Universal Championship picture.
For some months now, speculation has suggested that WWE could pull out with a major swerve and have Rollins not only enter the Universal title picture, but also be the one that ends up dethroning Brock Lesnar for RAW's biggest prize.
It's no secret why this rumour rapidly escalated.
There was a great deal being made about Rollins being a fighting and defending champion, while his '#BrockWho' trend gained steam relatively quickly.
At first, Roman Reigns was seen as the frontrunner before he was supposedly leapfrogged by Braun Strowman.
However, The Big Dog has emerged as the favourite one more, and Monday's result had many fans believing that the reason he dropped the title was so that he can enter the multi-person match at Extreme Rules to determine the number one contender to The Beast's title.
POSSIBLE PLANS
Now, though, WrestlingNews.co has revealed what Rollins' actual plan might be at Extreme Rules next month, and it might not have anything to do with the Universal Championship.
Instead, the source has revealed that people within the company have been told that Ziggler will defend the Intercontinental Championship against the former Shield member, even though the two are set to have their rematch on RAW next week.
While it's great that Rollins is still attached to a championship in some way, it's perhaps not the title fans want him to hold.
He's done a fantastic job of elevating the prestige of the title and being the fighting champion the red brand desperately needed.
Despite that, there has been an outpour of support on social media for months now, suggesting they want Rollins in the Universal Championship picture at last, but they might have to wait a little longer for that.
