Brazil's 2-0 win over Costa Rica was nowhere near as comfortable as the scoreline might suggest.Stoppage-time goals from Philippe Coutinho and Neymar helped Tite's side to a vital three points in Group E.It might have been more, but a penalty won in dubious circumstances by the PSG forward was overturned by VAR.Replays showed that was indeed the correct decision and it wasn't the only time the Selecao seemed to get on the wrong side of the referee. There were numerous flashpoints between Brazil players and the match officials, yet one man who can count himself lucky not to have been in the book is Marcelo. The Real Madrid left-back shone and was probably his side's best player in the first half, producing some impressive skills but more importantly, orchestrating much of Brazil's play going forward. However, late on the 30-year-old was also caught on camera shoving Costa Rica's Johnny Acosta in the face in an off-the-ball incident.

All the focus was on Neymar after a coming-together that left the world's most expensive player on the floor.

Marcelo was lucky

While plenty of fans spotted what Marcelo was up to, he wasn't even booked - though many pointed out his actions were just as bad as what Sergi Roberto did to him during El Clasico back in May, with the Barcelona man receiving a red card.

Admittedly, there was no need for Acosta to go down like that, but Marcelo can still count himself a lucky boy to have got away with it.

After all, there are plenty of officials out there who will show a red at the first sight of a raised hand and it could have at least been a yellow.

Even with VAR, you have to feel for the referees at the World Cup and on this occasion, Björn Kuipers definitely had his work cut out.

Costa Rica may feel a little aggrieved at Brazil's antics and it's fair to say they'll be attracting a lot of attention going forward as they all but step into the last-16.

Most of the tournament favourites haven't been particularly inspiring so far and in the final group game against Serbia on Wednesday, we'll hope to see a much more convincing performance from the South Americans.

Should Marcelo have been sent off? Have your say in the comments.
