Following his win at Money in the Bank, AJ Styles will be holding on to his WWE Championship for at least another month.
The Phenomenal One defeated Shinsuke Nakamura in a brutal last man standing match last Sunday - with many saying it was those two that stole the whole show.
STYLES VS NAKAMURA
Actually, it looks like that battle may have finally ended the pair's long-running feud that began all the way back in January after Nakamura won the Royal Rumble.
Their first match was at WrestleMania 34 and since then, the King of Strong Style has had multiple title shots over the last few months - but each time he's failed to win the belt.
Now, after events on this week's SmackDown Live, it appears that AJ will be facing a new challenge at Extreme Rules next month.
THE NEW NUMBER ONE CONTENDER
The main event of the show was a gauntlet match to decide the new number one contender for the WWE Championship.
To the delight of fans, it was Rusev who won that match, making The Miz tap out and ensuring that Rusev Day will be falling on July 15.
Seeing someone else, rather than Nakamura challenge Styles for SmackDown's top prize will be refreshing - however, WWE fans won't like why the Bulgarian Brute has been put into the title picture.
PLANS FOR RUSEV AND THE WWE CHAMPIONSHIP
According to Brad Shepard, who's been speaking on the Backstage With WWE podcast, Rusev's win was apparently more important to his fans than WWE management.
In fact, he's only going to be a placeholder until SummerSlam - and he won't be winning the title next month.
“He’s not going to win but it’s a nice little thing to do it’s something different and gives the fans who like Rusev something important," Shepard said, per Ringside News.
"So it’s a cool little for them to do and you know it’s fine. It should be fun. It’s different and it’s not AJ vs Nakamura again because we’re all tired of that.”
Arguably, WWE have made the right decision to have Rusev challenge, but not beat Styles - because there are plenty of other stars who deserve the title more than him.
But that will be no consolation for the Bulgarian's fans - because it sounds like WWE are going to ruin another Rusev Day.
