The Dallas Mavericks may have been the biggest winners on draft night as they acquired the services of talented European sensation Luka Doncic.

They pulled off a trade with the Atlanta Hawks to acquire the Slovenian who was one of the biggest prospects in this class.

After concluding their draft business, the Mavs will now switch their attention to free agency.

Searching for a big

It's believed that they are targeting a center and are hoping to attract one on the open market after passing on the likes of Mo Bamba, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Wendell Carter Jr. in the draft.

According to Michael Scotto of The Athletic, the Mavericks believe they have a strong chance to land free agent DeMarcus Cousins.

Cousins is currently recovering from an Achilles injury but he's still a valuable option and it seems Dallas hasn't been put off.

The franchise can free up around $30 million in cap space to make a run for the All-Star who enjoyed a fine season with the New Orleans Pelicans before his campaign cruelly came to an end.

His presence in Texas would instantly make him the focal point of the team with his scoring and rebounding ability.

The 27-year-old averaged 25.2 points, 12.9 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game for the Pelicans.

Putting him alongside Doncic, Harrison Barnes and Dennis Smith Jr. would give the Mavs an impressive starting unit.

It's unclear what Cousins is looking to do, as a return to the Pels isn't guaranteed at this stage.

The Mavericks could be prepared to offer him a good contract but it's unlikely that he'll receive a long-term deal from any team in the league as there's a shortage of cap space.

It wouldn't be a surprise to see him sign a one or two-year deal below the max and potentially look to hit free agency again in the coming years.

But there's serious interest in Texas and it's something he should consider when the market opens on July 1.

Along with the former Sacramento Kings star, Dallas may also target Houston Rockets big man Clint Capela, according to Scotto.

Capela, however, is likely to command a max deal and is only a restricted free agent so that could be more complicated to pull off.

A move for Cousins is more realistic but their hopes could hinge on New Orleans and if they're prepared to offer him a max salary to remain.

With the start of free agency just a week away, we'll soon have the answer to these questions.
