With the second pick in this year's draft, the Sacramento Kings had several options to choose from with a talented pool of players at their disposal. They decided to select Marvin Bagley III from Duke, choosing him ahead of hot European prospect Luka Doncic. The Kings were always expected to choose one of the two after it became apparent that Deandre Ayton would be taken number one by the Phoenix Suns.

Better fit

General manager Vlade Divac was asked why the franchise ultimately opted to go for Bagley over Doncic and he explained how it wasn't a difficult choice for them.

"Marvin for us is a better fit, a better player and a great talent. It was an easy choice for us," he said, per Jason Jones of the Sac Bee.

Sacramento has been in the lottery for the last 12 seasons as they currently hold the longest playoff drought in the league.

For that reason, they haven't been an attractive destination for players but the 19-year-old surprisingly expressed a desire to play for the Kings.

His excitement to play for the organisation made it easier for the front office to decide to bring him on board.

But Divac also pointed to the power forward's versatility as another key reason for why they wanted him.

"He can play small forward. He can play three, four and five With Marvin's unique talent he can play multiple positions," he said.

With a young core of Bagley, De'Aaron Fox and Bogdan Bogdanovic, Sac has the makings of an impressive young team.

Clearly excited by the potential of the squad, Divac made an extremely bold statement to the assembled media during Bagley's introductory press conference.

“My team is a superteam, just young," Divac said. "We are, you know, competing. We are playing hard, we are playing fun, fast.

"We talk about last year, you had a few of those super teams… we beat them twice, I believe. We just have to learn and be better every day, every year.”

Referring to the Kings as a super team seems a bit crazy but he can't be faulted for having confidence in his young team.

After languishing in mediocrity for a number of years, fans in Sac-Town can finally see some progress and should be happy with the potential on the roster at last.

The future is definitely getting brighter in Sacramento at last.
