Cristiano Ronaldo had the perfect opportunity to extend his World Cup goal tally against Iran. The Real Madrid superstar has experienced the perfect start to life in Russia, scoring a hat-trick against Spain in the opening game and heading home the winning goal in a tough clash with Morocco.Iran were never going to be the easiest opponents, though, with the Asian country putting up a stern test against Spain in a tense 1-0 defeat. That being said, it was the country who Ronaldo scored his first ever World Cup goal against so there was a bit of history going into the game. The first-half was a tense affair with Portugal failing to regularly breakdown their opponents despite some questionable goalkeeping.

Portugal vs Iran

Ricardo Quaresma was the man to break the deadlock before the break, scoring a stunning 'trivela' effort to become the first Portugal player other than Ronaldo to score at the tournament.

Nevertheless, Ronaldo had the chance to continue his record when Portugal were awarded a penalty in the second-half virtue of VAR.

After his cool, calm and collected effort against Spain, you would have backed the 33-year-old to score.

Gary Lineker's cheeky tweet

But it just wasn't to be with Ali Beiranvand making an accomplished save to his lefthand side.

Unsurprisingly, it sparked quite the reaction on Twitter and Gary Lineker was on hand to lead the reaction.

He needed just 10 words to make his cheeky comment and it was superb - check it out below:

Ah yes, it's coming home and Harry Kane is bagging the Golden Boot.

Alan Shearer was on form, too, posting a similar effort. Take a look:

Kane propelled himself right to the top of the goalscoring charts with a superb hat-trick against Panama on Sunday afternoon and two came from the penalty spot.

It's fair to say the Tottenham striker took his penalties with far more conviction and success than Ronaldo managed against Iran.

The miss may also make a certain Lionel Messi feel a little better after he missed from 12 yards against Iceland.

For the time being, though, Kane still leads the way and he won't mind that penalty miss one bit.
