Portugal came so close to being eliminated from the 2018 World Cup.

The European nation simply had to avoid defeat against Iran in their final group game and all looked well after Ricardo Quaresma's wonder goal.

His wonderful trivela will go down as one of the tournament's finest and Cristiano Ronaldo had the chance to put the game to bed.

Portugal were awarded a penalty courtesy of VAR, but their talisman saw his spot kick saved by Alireza Beiranvand.

Iran then got a penalty of their own right before the end, with Karim Ansarifard converting after a dubious handball from Cedric Soares.

Medhi Taremi then missed a chance in injury-time to send the Asian side through as Portugal barely held on.

Ronaldo's missed penalty means the Euro 2016 winners will face a harder last-16 game against Uruguay.

And Ronaldo was at the centre of a controversial incident when it appeared he deliberately elbowed Morteza Pouraliganji.

You can watch the footage below.

It loos a bit naughty from the 33-year-old, but after a VAR review, the referee brandished a yellow card instead of red.

The whole incident divided Twitter, but Iran manager Carlos Queiroz is adamant that Ronaldo's reputation is all that kept him on the pitch.

He said: "It is an elbow and if there is an elbow it is a red card.

"The rules don’t say if it is [Lionel] Messi or Ronaldo it is only a little bit of an elbow. It is a red card. How can he give a yellow for an elbow?

"What is the difference in an elbow made by Ronaldo or someone else? The VAR washes his hands like [Pontius] Pilate.

"Everyone agrees that VAR is not going well. The only countries that do not complain are Portugal and Spain."

He's not holding back.

Quieroz is Portuguese himself and has history with Ronaldo back in his days with Manchester United.

And his words may bare some truth, but sadly, we'll never actually know if a lesser player would have been given his marching orders in Ronaldo's shoes.
