It has been quite a dramatic World Cup so far.England sent hopes soaring with a dominant win over Panama, Germany snuck past Sweden right at the very last, and Brazil, despite boasting one of the most exciting squads at the tournament, scraped past a spirited Costa Rica, having already drawn with Switzerland in their opening game.Meanwhile, South American rivals Argentina will have to beat Nigeria to secure their place in the next round after being humbled by Croatia in one of the biggest shocks of the tournament. However, the drama reached new heights on Monday night when the final games of Group B kicked off.Spain and Portugal were level on four points, and both sides were far from guaranteed a spot in the next round.Portugal took on Iran needing to avoid a loss to move onto the next round while Spain faced a Morrocco side playing with nothing to lose, having already been eliminated. In the end, the big boys progressed, but only after being given a mighty fright in both games.Portugal, having taken the lead in the first half through a sublime Ricardo Quaresma finish, very nearly blew the lot after conceding a late penalty that saw them scrambling frantically to keep their World Cup dreams alive.Spain on the other hand, went behind early to Morrocco before an emphatic Isco equaliser restored parody. However, they found themselves staring down the barrel yet again after a towering Youssef En Nesyri header in the 81st minute.Spain somehow managed to find an equaliser through Iago Aspas but there is no questioning that the European heavyweights are underperforming. On paper, Spain have one of the strongest teams at the tournament but their group stage performances have left many people worried that they simply aren’t clicking.Spanish football expert Guillem Balague is one of those who has not been impressed with Spaniards efforts so far in Russia.Balague knows the Spanish game inside out, and was clearly hoping for a more comfortable ride to the round of 16 than what he witnessed. Here is what he had to say about Spain’s group stage efforts:

Crikey. Not impressed then.

He’s not wrong though.

Spain have been frightfully fragile at the back and their sparkling midfield is yet to really fire on all cylinders.

It would be unwise to write them off just yet, but the fact remains that they are going to have to improve if they wish to claim their second World Cup.

Are Spain capable of going all the way to the Moscow final? Let us know in the comments below.
