Somehow, Argentina did it.

There has been a great deal of turmoil inside the camp at this World Cup and La Albiceleste were in need of three points in their final group game against Nigeria.

Anything less and they would crash out of the tournament.

But three points is exactly what they delivered, with Lionel Messi scoring and Argentina winning 2-1.

Messi stepped up but Marcos Rojo will take the headlines.

The centre-back found himself in Nigeria’s penalty box in the 90th minute when Gabriel Mercado sent a wonderful cross in.

Rojo looked like Sergio Aguero as he thundered the ball home with his right foot.

Sampaoli's reaction at full-time

It was a truly incredible moment, and it could provide the catalyst for an Argentinian revival.

Jorge Sampaoli’s influence over his team is reported to have decreased after the opening two matches of the tournament.

And his reaction at full-time suggests there’s clearly something going wrong.

While the players celebrated on the pitch, the Argentina boss headed straight down the tunnel.

Sampaoli was ecstatic following Rojo’s winner but at the full-time whistle, there was no emotion whatsoever.

Argentina needed to win and hope that Iceland failed to beat Croatia in the other Group D match.

That’s precisely what happened; Iceland fell to a 2-1 defeat.

It sets up a meeting between Argentina and France in the round-of-16 and there are plenty of subplots in that match.

Just like Argentina, France haven’t been at their fluent best in Russia.

We're also close to a meeting between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

If Argentina defeat France and Portugal overcome Uruguay, we'll have the clash that every football fan would love to see.

Messi v Ronaldo. How about that one to decide the GOAT?
