In what was seen as a major surprise at the time, Dolph Ziggler snatched the Intercontinental Championship from Seth Rollins last week on Monday Night RAW.

The Kingslayer's open challenge didn't exactly pan out as he'd hoped, having retained the prestigious title just 24 hours earlier by defeating Elias at Money in the Bank.

NEW CHAMPION

With an opportunity to make history this week on RAW, The Architect failed in his attempt to reclaim the crown.

Although he won the match, it was via disqualification after Drew McIntyre got involved, meaning The Showoff kept the championship.

At the time of the loss, fans assumed the decision was made so that the former Shield member could enter the multi-person Extreme Rules match to decide who will challenge Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship.

However, Extreme Rules advertisements have revealed that Ziggler will defend the gold against Rollins again, with a push that seems to have come from nowhere.

Fans know that The Show has been created to help elevate McIntyre to that main event level, where he rightfully belongs.

Naturally, the WWE has learned from its mistakes and won't be fast-tracking 'The Chosen One' to the main event picture like they tried and failed to do during his first stint.

Instead, it seems as if Ziggler could be getting a slight and sudden push before that.

When discussing the matter on PW Insider Elite Radio, Mike Johnson speculated that this could be WWE's way of rebooting the Ziggler character in the hope that this push tempts Ziggler to sign a new deal.

CONTRACT

As is common knowledge, Ziggler's latest deal is going to expire this summer.

According to Ringside News, he said: "I don’t know how WWE will follow up on this but if they are smart, they’re well on their way of finally after so many years rebooting Dolph Ziggler and getting him into a position of prominence.

"Now what’s interesting is Ziggler’s deal is up later this summer. If they are going to invest in Dolph and get him to re-up with this company, now is the time to do it.

"Hopefully. this is a case where they are going to sincerely push him, and they are going to finally make him the asset he’s always been for that company and kinda overlooked.

"Instead of being overlooked by the company, it’s not a case of let's use him now and get him locked in, and once he signs paper to pencil we can toss him to the waste side again.”

A lot of fans have criticised WWE over their handling of Ziggler throughout the years.

This partnership with McIntyre seems to be working, even if it's McIntyre who will become the mega-star out of it.

However, if a run as champion is enough to keep him in WWE, then it's probably something the fans can get behind.
