Ahead of the 2018 Wimbledon Championships next month, 20-time Grand Slam Champion, Roger Federer says players should utilise the serve and volley more.

Having first brought up the point after winning his eighth Wimbledon title last year, Federer explained the challenges of the serve and volley and why it is considered more difficult now.

"I don’t think it’s more difficult for me naturally," he said, as per Tennis World USA. "I know if I said necessarily against me. I just said more guys should try to serve and volley because if it works, well you have that option and if it doesn’t work you stay back, but if you never try you don’t know.

"And then if you’re going to start to serve and volleying just from time to time it doesn’t work because you’re just not comfortable out there, you haven’t spent enough time out there."

Speaking at a press conference in Halle, the Swiss added that he thinks some responsibility rests on the coaches to introduce different tactics for players to potentially use from a young age.

"So, I think it’s something you have to do starting in practice, not just in a match all of a sudden," he continued.

"So, it would be nice if coaches at the junior level already would teach not just volleying at the net but actually transition volleying, you know, a lot of serve and volleying because I do believe it still can be used to great effect."

Federer is certainly qualified to give advice to other players, having picked up 20 Grand Slam titles in his career spanning two decades.

Having previously displayed a majestic ability to serve and volley, the Swiss player went on to discuss why the technique provides such a great option.

"There are tournaments out there that play faster and it’s just nice to have that option, especially in a time when a lot of players forget how to use the serve and volley effectively and you would be one of the players who would have that option compared to another player."

Federer will be looking to add a 21st Grand Slam title and a ninth Wimbledon Championship next month at the prestigious UK tournament, starting on July 2.
