The argument rumbles on whether it was a good idea for Gareth Southgate to rotate his England side against Belgium.A 1-0 defeat saw the Three Lions finish second in Group G, setting up a difficult last-16 clash with Colombia when draw or victory would have seen them face Japan. However, if they navigate past Colombia, England would face either Sweden or Switzerland for a place in the semi-final, rather than a probable quarter-final with Brazil if they had won the group. Then there’s the argument about whether England’s momentum has been stunted by a loss. We’re just going to have to wait until Tuesday to find out whether or not England were better off finishing second.Southgate made eight changes from England’s 6-1 victory against Panama ahead of the game with Belgium with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford being one of those that remained in the starting line-up.However, the Everton goalie is being blamed for the role he played in the goal.Former Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj cut in from the right and fired a left-footed strike into the far corner. On first viewing, it looked unstoppable. However, replays showed that the ball was far from being in the top corner and then Pickford maybe should have done better.

Fans and pundits have had their say but the other goalkeeper on the pitch at the time has given his opinion - and it’s pretty strong.

COURTOIS CALLS OUT PICKFORD

Thibaut Courtois seemingly isn’t a member of the ‘Goalkeeper’s union’ and has mocked Pickford for being too short and trying to pull off a ‘camera save’.

“The goalkeeper is 10cm smaller than me,” the Chelsea goalkeeper said. “I would have caught it. He was too busy throwing his legs in the air.”

Courtois clearly thinks Pickford should have done better with Januzaj’s effort and so too does pundit Gary Neville.

After the match, Neville said: “His feet are off the ground when he’s jumping. He goes with his wrong hand. It’s just a bit weird.”
