It was back in March when Jamie Carragher’s career as a football pundit was placed in jeopardy.

The former Liverpool defender, who has forged a successful post-playing career analysing the game, was suspended by Sky Sports after spitting out of his car at a Manchester United supporter and his 14-year-old daughter.

It was a stunning incident which lead to an appearance on Sky News in which Carragher apologised.

Gary Neville continued to lead Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football show while Carragher served his suspension.

But he wasn’t entirely absent, with Danish channel TV3 Sport continuing to hire the 40-year-old as a pundit.

And he still writes a column for the Telegraph.

Fans of the Premier League have been awaiting a decision on Carragher’s future and Sky Sports finally know what they’re planning for the 2018-19 season.

Sky Sports make decision

According to the Daily Mail, Carragher will return to his role at the broadcaster next season while on a final warning.

The former centre-back met with Sky Sports chief Barney Francis last week. He convinced his employers that there wouldn’t be a repeat of the incident which attracted so much negative attention.

A Sky spokesman said: “We’ve spoken to Jamie and reminded him of the standards we expect at Sky Sports.

“He has shown remorse, is hugely apologetic for the offence he caused and has taken the appropriate steps to make sure that the incident will not be repeated.”

So Carragher will be present when the Premier League gets underway in August.

The situation was discussed by those at the top of Sky Sports but Carragher was eventually helped by the remorse he has shown as well as his popularity within the company.

It’s inevitable that the spitting incident will be brought up when Carragher returns - that’s something he’s going to have to deal with.

And many of the comments that come his way on social media won’t just be jokes.

There are many who believe he should have been sacked.

Carragher remains one of the finest pundits in British football and he has been genuinely remorseful through what has been a tough time.

He will just be hoping things return to some normality when the new season starts.
