Following criticism of his son's driving, Jos Verstappen has jumped to the defence of his son, Max, after the Dutch driver triumphed in the Austrian Grand Prix at the weekend.

The 20-year-old finished top of the podium at the race in Spielberg on Sunday, but has faced critics for his driving style whilst at Red Bull this season.

Verstappen was involved in a number of incidents that hampered his chances during the first few months of the season but has stayed out of trouble more recently - and is reaping the rewards.

But the Belgian-born driver, who races under the Dutch flag, has been defended by his Dad Jos, himself a 106-time Grand Prix driver.

Jos believes that Max does not need to alter his aggressive racing style, which he feels paid dividends during his win in Austria.

"It was said that he had to change his driving style, but because of his driving style, he took the win," Jos said after Max's triumph in Spielberg, where he led from lap 26 of the race.

"If Max had not made that pass on [Kimi] Raikkonen in the first lap, he would not have won. So, let's not talk about that anymore.

"It is something that makes Max so good and this result proves it."

Verstappen Sr remains an avid supporter of son's career progress and admitted Max is fully focused on proving his critics wrong.

Jos continued: "We always talk to each other, but I think that is not even necessary. Max himself knows what's happening.

"On Sunday he showed that he understands it very well. I just talked to some people and suggested that we would never question his abilities again, because he really knows what he is doing."

After picking up his first win of the campaign, the young Red Bull ace has jumped above Valtteri Bottas in the drivers' standings and is now just three points behind teammate Daniel Ricciardo.
