Brazil's 2-0 victory over Mexico in the last-16 of the World Cup has been overshadowed somewhat by Neymar's playacting.

The world's most expensive player broke the deadlock for the Selecao in the 51st minute, with Roberto Firmino putting the game to bed with two minutes of normal time remaining.

However, when those goals are eventually forgotten, the ex-Barcelona forward's theatrics will live long in the memory.

When Miguel Layun appeared to step on his ankle, the 26-year-old appeared to hugely overreact, rolling around hysterically and shouting in pain.

Mexico boss Juan Carlos Osorio was among Neymar's most vocal critics after the final whistle, telling a press conference:

“It’s not a good example for soccer, and for the world of soccer, for all the kids playing.

“This should be a sport of ability, of determination, a game of men, not of so much clowning.”

Diego Maradona is man who knows all too well what it's like to steal the limelight from the rest of his nation in the aftermath of his antics during Argentina's campaign.

The Albiceleste are now out, of course, courtesy of a 4-3 defeat to France, but the 1986 World Cup winner has weighed in with his opinion on Neymar's behaviour.

Maradona has his say on Neymar

"Neymar must be told that 'either you make us cry or you make us laugh,'" the 57-year-old told TV show De La Mano del Diez, quoted by Marca.

"When the Mexican stepped on him I wanted to cry but seeing him run with the ball later I wanted to laugh."

Perhaps Maradona is right and whatever the PSG superstar does should be taken with a pinch of salt, especially as he's also chipped in with two goals and an assist in his four games so far.

Unsurprisingly, though, Mexico found it no laughing matter when he was moving freely and running on the ball within minutes of the incident.

It's fair to say we've seen the good and the bad of him in equal measure out in Russia and it's a pity he isn't being talked about purely for football reasons.

Inevitably, most have taken a dim view of his playacting, and many felt his over-the-top reaction actually saved Layun from being sent off.

Brazil are next in action in Friday's quarter-final against Belgium.
