What an incredible night for England. After all the penalty shootout heartbreak over the years, from Italia '90 to Euro 2012, England have won on spot kicks for only the second time and for the first time at a World Cup.The whole nation erupted when Jordan Pickford denied Carlos Bacca and Eric Dier smashed home his penalty to send the Three Lions to the quarter-finals.It wasn't pretty from England and there will definitely need to be tactical alterations going into the Sweden game, but everybody's just enjoying the result right now and with good reason. If nothing else, you get the sense that there's a real buzz around the squad, staff and all the supporters at home and in Russia.

Fabregas working with BBC

Even those with little association to England have become captivated by their World Cup campaign and that includes Cesc Fabregas.

The Chelsea midfielder has tried his hand at punditry this summer, giving his analysis to BBC Sport and has already witnessed his native Spain drop out of the competition.

La Roja's penalty shootout defeat to Russia meant that England were the clear favourite on their side of the knockout tree, give or take dark horses Croatia.

Fabregas posts great tweet

And there's now a real sense that clashes with Sweden and then Croatia or Russia presents a real opportunity for England to go deep into the tournament.

All that considered then, Fabregas couldn't help himself from tweeting about England at the full-time whistle yesterday and it went down a treat with England fans.

It seems the Chelsea man is really starting to consider that football could be coming home.

There's a long way for England to go before that's the case but Gareth Southgate has the opportunity of a lifetime on his hands right now.

With Belgium entering a quarter-final clash with Brazil, it's safe to say that group stage defeat looks rather insignificant right now.

As long as England can hold their nerve against Sweden and keep up the intensity that has seen them start so well in games, there's every reason to dream.

"Our fans that were here were brilliant but it was almost an away game, so to deal with all of that was exceptional. It's something the players can always look back on now and draw on as an experience," Southgate noted after the game.

"We've talked about creating their own stories and creating their own history and we've done a little bit of that tonight. We go to a quarter-final, but I don't want to go home yet."

We don't want you to either, Gareth.
