No, you weren’t dreaming - England have won a penalty shootout in a World Cup.The Three Lions made hard work of their last-16 clash against Colombia as they failed to see out their 1-0 lead given to them by Harry Kane’s 57th-minute penalty.Yerry Mina’s injury-time header forced the match into extra-time and then, inevitably, penalties. It had been a particularly feisty encounter. It was Wilmar Barrios that kicked things off with a needless ‘headbutt’ on Jordan Henderson in the 41st-minute as Kieran Trippier prepared to take a free-kick from a dangerous position.Barrios’ actions were reviewed and he only received a yellow card.Over the 120 minutes, five further Colombians picked up bookings, while Jesse Lingard and Henderson - who produced a slight ‘headbutt’ of his own - picked up a yellow card. There was certainly plenty of needle throughout the encounter. And that much was seen in the celebrations after Eric Dier’s winning penalty. After Dier slammed his penalty past David Ospina, the England players ran over to the midfielder and goalkeeping hero Jordan Pickford. But after such a battle with the Colombians, both John Stones and Harry Maguire wanted to mock their opponents. After Dier found the net, the two defenders turned around to look at their devastated opponents.

ENGLAND FANS LOVED IT

It probably wasn’t very sporting but England fans loved it:

While Stones and Maguire weren’t the most gracious winners, Henderson showed his class by going over to the injured James Rodriguez after the penalty victory who was sat in the dugout.

In previous years, England players may have got caught up in the occasion and reacted to the behaviour of the Colombia players - we’re looking at you, David Beckham and Wayne Rooney.

But other than Henderson’s little moment of madness where he put the back of his head into an opponent, the England players stayed remarkably calm in such a pressure occasion.
