Many NBA fans around the world were surprised when DeMarcus Cousins announced earlier this week that he would be signing with the Golden State Warriors this offseason, and there was quite an interesting process behind that happening.

On Monday, Cousins agreed to a one-year, $5.3 million deal with the Warriors in order to try and build his value back up for free agency in 2019 following his Achilles injury.

The deal filled up needs for both player and team. Golden State now has their replacement Zaza Pachulia, David West and JaVale McGee, while Cousins now has a team after not receiving a single long-term contract by any team.

While the deal itself was very surprising for many NBA fans, Cousins has revealed the process behind the move and how frustrating it was for him to receive no long-term offers from any teams despite what he can do on the court when healthy.

Cousins spoke to Marc Spears of The Undefeated and revealed that he was standing on the balcony of his off-season home alone at 5 am in Las Vegas still without a long-term offer from any team.

“I was shocked. I didn’t believe it. It was a rough, pretty emotional night," he said.

Cousins then called his long-time agent Jarin Akana with an interesting plan, to sign a mid-level exception with an elite team. He suggested giving the Warriors a call.

He said: “I was f—– up. I said to Jarin, ‘Let’s make a call.’ He was shocked. It was very insulting to not receive an offer. But I understand. I prepared myself for this.”

Cousins called Warriors general manager Bob Myers at around 8 am and the rest is history. Myers cannot talk about free agents until they can sign with teams on Friday, so it will be interesting to hear his side of the story later this week.

The center also contacted Warriors stars Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, and Draymond Green about their thoughts of him signing with the Warriors, and they were all up for it happening.

With five All-Stars now in their starting lineup, Golden State are now the clear favourites to win the NBA Championship next season.
