Gareth Southgate took the England hot seat in October 2017 after Sam Allardyce was unceremoniously sacked. The former England manager, who only took charge of one game, shared some interesting advice for Southgate after the win over Colombia.

Allardyce's advice for Southgate

Speaking on talkSPORT on Wednesday morning, Allardyce urged Southgate to drop either Kieran Trippier or Kyle Walker and suggested drafting Eric Dier into the first XI.

"I don't think we were stunning or fluid and I certainly don't think we [England] were very clinical in front of goal again but in the end we won it," said Allardyce on talkSPORT.

"All that we did or didn't do will be forgotten this morning because we're through and we're through against Sweden.

The former England boss was asked how the Three Lions could score more goals from open play.

"System change would be my thought," Allardyce responded.

"Perhaps we could've changed from a back three to a back two.

"We could go with a back two against Sweden because I don't think they've got anything to concern us going forward, having watched them against Switzerland.

"England don't need to play with three at the back. They could play comfortably with two defenders and put the extra man in midfield."

Allardyce was pressed on who he would leave out in order to add a man in midfield.

"For me, it would have to be Trippier or Kyle Walker.

"If you left Trippier out, you put Walker at right-back and if you left Walker out you'd leave Trippier at right-back.

"If I was in Gareth's shoes, I would seriously consider changing the system."

Asked about a potential semi-final against Croatia, Allardyce thinks Southgate should consider playing Eric Dier alongside Jordan Henderson.

"We've got to get past Sweden first. But if you want to look at Croatia, you would consider Henderson and Dier together and then another one just in front of them.

"Have a solid two midfield players against Rakitic and Modric because they are the outstanding players of Croatia."

Despite scoring the winning penalty, Dier produced a pretty dismal cameo performance after being substituted on during the second-half.

England fans were not impressed with the 63-year-old's comments - they're just glad Southgate is the man calling the shots.

It wouldn't be coming home if Allardyce was still charge.
