Is there anyone capable of stopping Roger Federer at Wimbledon?

Well, one man that certainly won’t be challenging the eight-time champion is Marin Cilic, after the number three seed crashed out of the second round in the biggest shock of the championships so far.

The 2017 runner-up entered the tournament in fine fettle, having beaten Novak Djokovic to win the title at Queen's only days before the start of Wimbledon.

However, having already gone two sets up against the number 73 seed Guido Pela, a rain delay resulted in the game being finished today, and that is when it all fell to bits for the Croatian.

Speaking in the aftermath of his shock exit, Cilic was unsurprisingly disappointed to be going home from a tournament he was so widely touted to be a real contender in.

“Yesterday I played really good. Played great two sets,” Cilic said.

“It was a little bit unfortunate to stop last night when I was a break down. When we came back the court was also very slippery. I lost there my serve.

“Today obviously he won that third set. In the fourth, I just was struggling a little bit to find the rhythm off the ground.

“I was missing some balls. I just didn’t feel so good. I was not as accurate as yesterday.

“I was just not feeling as comfortable as yesterday with hitting.

“I was just missing some balls, some easy balls, giving him a chance to come back.”

Crazy how much difference a disruption like that can make.

This is the kind of upset that Wimbledon is renowned for though, and fair play to Pela for a scintillating come back.

The lad must have had a damn good sleep.

Now, Cilic’s exit has opened up the path to the final for Federer, who will be even more confident of securing his ninth title at SW 19 now.

He is going to take some beating.
