It has been weeks since Kawhi Leonard reportedly requested a trade away from the San Antonio Spurs but we're still no closer to seeing the star depart.

The Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics have all reportedly been in trade discussions with the Spurs but have failed to conclude a deal.

The Texas-based franchise is believed to have put a huge asking price on the small forward's head which has prevented any potential trade from materialising.

A steep price to pay

They have informed all three teams that they require multiple young players and draft picks to even consider dealing their superstar player.

It's become clear that the two-time All-Star wants to return to his hometown of Los Angeles and he initially signalled a preference to play for the Lakers, according to reports.

But since the purple and gold pulled off a major coup in landing free agent LeBron James, Leonard's desire to join the storied franchise has softened.

According to ESPN's Michael C. Wright, he still wants to return to LA but now prefers a move to the Clippers over the Lakers.

"The Lakers are not Kawhi's preferred destination anymore," Wright said, per Bleacher Report. "He wants to go to the Clippers.

"Because he doesn't want to go and be second fiddle to LeBron. That's what I was told. I was told by somebody that would know. So right now the Clippers are where he wants to go.

"But I'm also told—I talked to people within the Spurs organisation—and they're like, 'Yeah he wants to go to the Clippers, but their assets are s--t at this point.'"

This would put the Lakers in a difficult position as they're still keen on acquiring the two-time Defensive Player of the Year and were hoping to pair him with LeBron.

But they seem unwilling to dismantle their roster and give up most of their talented young assets to do so.

They're also exploring the possibility of waiting a year until he becomes a free agent but there's no guarantee that he will want to join the Lakers in 2019.

Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports has also reported that they will face competition from the Clippers as the 27-year-old simply wants to be in LA.

"One thing that's been made abundantly clear. I'm going to stress this. There's no guarantee if Kawhi Leonard hits the market next summer that he's going to sign with the Lakers, period," he said on The Herd with Colin Cowherd.

"I think his options have broadened a little bit, just inside L.A. There's another team, obviously, in L.A. I think he'd be very much open to the Clippers."

This is yet another twist in this ongoing saga that has become the biggest storyline of the offseason.

It would be in the best interests of all parties to find a resolution soon but it appears this could drag on for much longer.
