After some very entertaining and competitive races in the Formula One season so far this year, there is some very interesting news doing the rounds.

Ahead of the British Grand Prix, held at Silverstone race track this weekend, F1 bosses and big wigs have been discussing slightly amending the points system used to score current races.

The major change would be to reward points for the top 15 places, instead of the current system which is the top 10 places.

This would certainly give the chance for more racers to breakthrough, and hopefully end up with a place on the podium.

As well as the proposed shake-up, F1 bosses are also considering introducing the award of points for fastest lap, and for number of time spent in pole position.

This news was revealed by Force India co-owner Vijay Mallya, who said the following to the press: “They’re considering whether the points system should go all the way down to 20, 20 being every car scores a point if they finish the race.

“The bottom starts with one point and then goes up. Or whether 10th should be extended down to 15th. All these discussions took place.”

This interesting proposal is being put to the strategy group, and would be bound to help the smaller teams, and give them some confidence in one day being able to challenge the top dogs such as Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull.

Auto Motor und Sport are claiming that the points from 2020 could be allocated on the basis of 25-20-18-16-14-12-10-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1.

Many have had their say on the matter, one being Christian Horner of Red Bull.

In an interview, he shunned the idea, saying: "'I think Formula 1 has far bigger problems to solve than the points system."

Many were quick to agree with Horner, adding that F1 bosses should be clamping down on mistakes and hazards that are occuring on most races, instead of spending a lot of time and money on introducing a new points system.

No matter what happens in terms of change, Formula 1 fans from all over the world will be sure to tune in this Sunday, as the famous British Grand Prix takes place with Lewis Hamilton eager to make a strong appearance on his home soil.
