On Wednesday, July 11, England will play in their first World Cup semi-final in 28 long years.

The Three Lions produced an encouraging performance to defeat Sweden 2-0 in Samara on Saturday.

The quarter-final win, courtesy of goals from Harry Maguire and Dele Alli, has left England supporters growing in confidence.

After progressing from Group G, the claims that football’s coming home were rather tentative.

It was meant as a joke.

Now, fans genuinely believe.

And why shouldn’t they, with Croatia or Russia to come in the semi-final?

Ferdinand praises Sterling

Jordan Pickford was named Man of the Match but there wouldn’t have been any complaints if the award was given to Harry Maguire, Kieran Trippier or Jordan Henderson.

The Liverpool midfielder has his critics but he excelled in his first match since missing a penalty in the shootout against Colombia.

Rio Ferdinand, a pundit on BBC, even singled Henderson out for special praise at full-time.

"I think Jordan Henderson's stock has gone up," Ferdinand said.

"He proved he can play it forward and he's done it better than anyone else today.

"The defensive work; the ground he covered, was phenomenal.

"If (Andrea) Pirlo plays that ball we are sat here celebrating it so why not Jordan?

“It's his character. A big part of his make up is that."

Ferdinand’s spot on.

Henderson played a role in Liverpool’s run to the Champions League final and he’s carried his form over into the World Cup.

The 28-year-old is playing with an extra desire following his missed penalty against Colombia.

He admitted after the victory that he is forever in Jordan Pickford’s debt - the goalkeeper saving from Carlos Bacca to hand Eric Dier the chance to win the shootout - and you get the sense that he’s hungry to make up for the miss.

There would be no better way of doing that than by helping England win the World Cup.
