England are in the semi-finals of the World Cup for the first time since 1990.

Gareth Southgate's men went into their quarter-final tie as the favourites, and they prevailed with an assured performance.

After an edgy start to the game, Harry Maguire settled English nerves with a powerful header with half-an-hour played.

Dele Alli then doubled their advantage in the second half to give England a two-goal advantage.

Southgate's side were made to endure a few nervy moments in the latter stages of the game, but Jordan Pickford produced a series of fine saves to preserve England's victory.

Sweden had high hopes going into the game, having qualified from a group containing Germany in first place.

But they were largely underwhelming throughout as they struggled to break down a resilient England defence.

But although they would have been frustrated, Sweden's manager, Janne Andersson, had some very classy comments for his opponents after the game.

"Yes I definitely believe England are good enough to win the World Cup," he admitted. "They are forceful, well organised. I want to pay tribute to the team and the coach.

"They are a good football side and they don't give a lot away. I believe that they are perfectly able to go all the way."

And when asked about his own side's poor performance, Andersson commented how it was always going to be tough against a 'really good opponent.'

"I'm not sure anything went wrong as such. We were faced with a really good opponent and we didn't reach peak performance.

"We were faced with a good team, England were the best team today. It's not always something goes wrong, sometimes your opponent is better. I have the greatest respect for them, and congratulations to England."

Very classy stuff from the Sweden manager.

You would understand that he would be frustrated after his nation were on the other end of a disappointing result, but he handled defeat with dignity.

It's not just the manager: the game was also played in a good spirit and without controversy. That is, of course, in complete juxtaposition to England's last 16 clash against Colombia.

England will now progress to the semi-finals, where they will play against Croatia for a spot in the World Cup final.
