It's been a World Cup of ups and downs for Raheem Sterling.

While he has been instrumental in guiding England to the semi-final, the Manchester City man has still attracted undeserved criticism throughout the tournament.

Due to his profligacy in front of goal, certain fans think Sterling should be dropped in favour of Marcus Rashford or Jamie Vardy.

However, what Sterling brings to Gareth Southgate's side is simply irreplaceable.

His performance against Sweden - while absent of a goal - was a true masterclass in stretching a low-block defence.

He held the ball up against two towering centre-backs, ran with intent and created chances for his teammates.

Sterling should have been recognised at England's most-important attacking player but instead, he received the lowest rating of anyone on the BBC's player rater.

Madness, especially when top journalists, pundits, England legends and teammates all say what a fantastic player he is and has been at the World Cup.

And the latest person to jump in on the Sterling debate is his former mentor Brendan Rodgers.

The current Celtic manager was the man who first used him in a more central role during his days with Liverpool.

“There is a reason every manager they work with picks them,” Rodgers said.

“I had a close relationship with Raheem at Liverpool and he is not judged on his performance, for some reason. This boy is fantastic.

"He is a top class player and knows the areas where he needs to improve – you can see how much he has over the last few years. His pace, personality and quality is massive for England.

"I know football is about opinion, but what these boys are bringing to England is great talent and energy.

“What is so encouraging is there is no ego in this England squad. A lot of guys have come through the lower levels and had to do the dirty work."

It's just so true.

Clearly, Sterling is aware of the fact he needs to improve at finishing, but the other assets in his game far outweigh that one negative.

He's humble, gets on with all his teammates and scares the life out of defences.

Croatia will certainly be wary of him.
