Cristiano Ronaldo is officially a Juventus player after signing a four-year contract worth a staggering £500,000 a week with the Italian giants. The legendary forward brings an end to his hugely-successful nine-year spell with Real Madrid, where he scored 450 goals in just 438 matches.Juventus have paid Real Madrid a reported €105 million for Ronaldo, who turned 33 in February but wants to play on until his early 40s."These years in Real Madrid, and in this city of Madrid, have been possibly the happiest of my life," Ronaldo said in an open letter on Madrid’s website."I only have feelings of enormous gratitude for this club, for this hobby and for this city. I can only thank all of them for the love and affection I have received."However, I believe that the time has come to open a new stage in my life and that is why I have asked the club to accept transferring me. I feel that way and I ask everyone, and especially our followers, to please understand me.“Having already conquered the Premier League and La Liga, Ronaldo now has his sights set on leading Juventus to glory in both Serie A and, crucially, the Champions League.

AS Roma's tweet after Juventus signed Ronaldo

The Portugal international will be acutely aware that inspiring Juve to major honours will enhance his chances of being widely regarded as the greatest footballer of all time when he hangs up his boots.

However, football fans will forever argue over whether Ronaldo was better than Lionel Messi and vice-versa. That particular debate, you sense, will never end.

But it’s safe to assume that AS Roma are firmly in the Messi camp after seeing the tweet they posted shortly after Ronaldo’s move to Juventus was confirmed.

Alongside four photos of Messi alongside Roma icon Francesco Totti, Roma’s English-speaking Twitter account wrote: “The King of Rome and the GOAT 👑🐐“

Why they might end up regretting the tweet

Given the timing, this felt like a clear dig at Ronaldo and Juventus.

And perhaps unsurprisingly, the tweet has racked up some seriously impressive numbers: 15,000 retweets and 25,000 ‘likes’ at the time of writing.

However, they may have shot themselves in the foot here.

Cristiano thrives off this sort of stuff and, rest assured, he will now be desperate to score when Juventus meet the Giallorossi this season.
