Cristiano Ronaldo will pull on the jersey of Juventus next season.

In one of the most high-profile transfers in recent history, Ronaldo called an end to his nine-year spell at Real Madrid that saw him win four Ballon d'Or trophies and as many Champions League titles.

The 33-year-old released a letter to everyone associated with Los Blancos after the move, writing: "These years in Real Madrid, and in this city of Madrid, have been possibly the happiest of my life.

""I only have feelings of enormous gratitude for this club, for this hobby and for this city. I can only thank all of them for the love and affection I have received.

"However, I believe that the time has come to open a new stage in my life and that is why I have asked the club to accept transferring me. I feel that way and I ask everyone, and especially our followers, to please understand me.

Rumours of Man Utd interest

"They have been absolutely wonderful for 9 years. They have been 9 unique years."

And now with closure, Ronaldo can fully focus on what lies ahead at Juventus.

However, there would have been few supporters who would have predicted such a move if Ronaldo wanted to leave the Bernabeu with Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United seeming the most likely candidates.

Man Utd's role in the transfer saga

Numerous reports floated around regarding United's role in the transfer saga in particular with some even indicating that Ed Woodward was planning to hijack Juventus' move.

Well, Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has shed light on the situation and it seems the Red Devils sensationally rejected a move for Ronaldo on financial grounds.

“Juventus is the only offer that Real Madrid has got. The only one," Balague outlined on his YouTube channel.

“Nobody else came, even though PSG and Manchester United were asked this summer and last summer. They always said no.

“Many reasons for it of course, it changes the whole finances of the club.

“Some calculations say it will be €400m for Juventus between the transfer and the wages.”

Jorge Mendes is even believed to have called Manchester United, only to receive a categorical 'no.'

Many supporters will consider that decision understandable given Ronaldo's age and the huge economic stress it would put on the club, even if a reunion would be the romantic option.

Others, however, would have loved to see Ronaldo back in a United jersey at all costs.

Sadly for the latter group of supporters, it seems they have already seen Ronaldo's last game in the famous red jersey after years of speculation.

And although Ronaldo could have favoured Juventus regardless, it will be the club they have to blame for not even trying.
