Robert Kubica made a long overdue return to a Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend at this weekend British race as test and reserve driver for Williams.

Kubica has not raced since Abu Dhabi in 2010 after a dreadful rallying accident left the Pole with life-threatening injuries.

Kubica had enjoyed a promising career up until that point with many fearing that the accident had completely ended his career in Formula 1. Thankfully, he has fought back remarkably as he bids to make a return to the sport.

At the time of his accident, there had been plenty of rumours circulating that Kubica was set to swap his then Renault team for Italian giants Ferrari which would have been a career-defining move for him.

Sadly it never materialised in the aftermath of his accident and neither team confirmed that a deal was ever in place.

However, on his return to race weekend at Silverstone, Kubica revealed that he had even gone so far as to sign a contract with Ferrari.

Speaking on the F1 podcast, Kubica was asked whether he had actually signed a deal with Ferrari to which he replied: “Yes”.

“[The] First [goal] is to enter F1. Second is to become established in F1, so you have good value, a good reputation, which is more difficult than to enter,” he continued.

“Third, you win a world championship or become a Ferrari driver. I haven’t won a world championship, in the end I haven’t become a Ferrari driver but I was very close.”

It’s hard to imagine what could have been for Kubica had he had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a Ferrari.

While the famous red flyers have struggled to emulate their dominance of the early 2000's of late, there is no doubting that Kubica would have still hauled in the points for the Italians.

While it is sad to think of what could have been for the Pole, it is fantastic to have him back on the circuit again, even if it is just in a reserve driver capacity.

Here’s hoping we could see him racing again soon.
