England were dreaming of a World Cup final after Kieran Trippier’s superb free-kick put them ahead after just five minutes against Croatia.

Luka Modric had bundled over Raheem Sterling on the edge of the box and the Spurs defender gave Gareth Southgate’s side the perfect start.

The Three Lions had chances to kill off the game but poor finishing meant that England held a narrow 1-0 lead at half-time.

With Croatia playing 120 minutes in their previous two knockout rounds, there was a belief that Zlatko Dalic’s would tire towards the end of the semi-final.

However, that really wasn’t the case.

Ivan Perisic equalised with a little more than 20 minutes remaining and Croatia appeared to be the better team for what was left of the 90 minutes.

And it was England holding on for extra-time.

And the Croats came within inches of going ahead in first-half injury-time of extra-time.

Mario Mandzukic pounced onto a cross and, with just a few yards out, would surely score past Jordan Pickford.

However, the Everton ‘keeper made a stunning save while clashing with the striker at the same time.

Pickford picked himself up to defend the corner, while Mandzukic was in agony on the ground.

And England fans all noticed what came out of Pickford’s mouth as the Juventus player needed treatment.

Unfortunately for Pickford, Mandzukic got the last laugh.

Just four minutes into the second-half of extra-time, he rolled the ball past Pickford to give Croatia a 2-1 win and send them through to the World Cup final.

They will face France on Sunday, while England will play Belgium in the third-place playoff on Saturday.
