Luka Modric has created history by leading Croatia to the World Cup final. The Croatian football team, who only formed in 1990, had only gone as far as the semi-finals in the World's biggest competition. That semi-final berth came in 1998, but they had a golden chance to go one better on Wednesday night when they met England at the Luzhniki Stadium. Many saw them as underdogs going into the tie, and that seemed to be the case as England took the lead after just five minutes. The Three Lions could have extended that lead as they dominated the first half, but England could not put away their chances. And Croatia made Gareth Southgate's team pay as they restored parity in the 68th minute, before Mario Mandzukic hit the winner in the second half of extra-time.That sparked scenes of jubilance as Croatia secured their progression into the final. But after the game, a number of Croatian players, including Luka Modric, took the opportunity to attack English media after the game.Modric argued that many journalists and pundits in England presumed their team would reach the final, giving them the fuel they needed in order to win the game.He then called on them to be 'humble' in the future. Ouch.“People were talking … English journalists, pundits from television,” he told ITV.“They underestimated Croatia tonight and that was a huge mistake. All these words from them we take, we were reading and we were saying: ‘OK, today we will see who will be tired.'"They should be more humble and respect their opponents more.“We showed again that we were not tired – we dominated the game mentally and physically.“We should have killed the game even before extra time. This is an amazing achievement for us – it’s a dream come true after such a long time."We are in the final and that is the biggest success in Croatia history. We have to be proud.”Watch the full interview here:

You've got to admit, he does have a point in some cases.

A lot of the media got carried away by plotting the team's route to the final.

Pundits suggested that England would overcome a supposedly 'tired' Croatian team, who had been forced into penalties in both the last 16 and the quarter-finals.

Even Gary Neville admitted on ITV coverage before the game that England would have the advantage the further the game went on.

But that was not the case. In fact, Croatia got even stronger as the game went on, while England faltered.

England will now go on to the third place playoff against Belgium on Saturday, while Croatia contest the final against France the day after.
