England's World Cup journey came to an end on Wednesday night as they were defeated 2-1 after extra-time by Croatia. It was a disappointing end to what was a fantastic tournament for England.Gareth Southgate was bold with his team selection going into the finals: he refused to pick on reputation and instead picked on form. And it proved to be the right decision as England's inexperienced and young side proved their worth in Russia. While names including Joe Hart and Jack Wilshere, others such as Jordan Pickford and Harry Maguire emerged into stars.Maguire especially can hold his head up high with his performances in Russia. The Leicester City centre-back was a rock at the heart of England's defence throughout. There are some in England that feel as if he was the nation's best player across the duration of the competition.Like many of England's players, Maguire sent an emotional tweet after the nation's exit."Devastated. Absolutely gutted. Thanks to the fans for your incredible support. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🦁❤️"

His tweet attracted a lot of attention, with many across the world praising him for his efforts this summer.

That included none other than Alan Shearer, who felt the need to tweet Maguire after his displays in Russia.

The Newcastle and England legend left a simple yet powerful message for the 25-year-old.

He wrote: "Hold your head up high. You were brilliant."

It's worth noting that was the only message of support Shearer had for England players on Twitter after the game.

That says a lot about Maguire's impact in Russia.

The centre-back had only made five appearances for his country prior to the tournament.

Questions marks were raised when Southgate preferred Maguire to Gary Cahill in the centre of defence.

But Maguire, like many in that England team, proved the doubters wrong with some sensational displays.

He was rewarded for his efforts with a stunning header against Sweden in the quarter-finals which paved the way for England's 2-0 victory.

As Shearer says, Maguire should not feel disappointed. He, as well as many of England's players, were brilliant throughout and deserve great credit for their performances.

If his performances for England are anything to go by, Maguire has a very bright future ahead of him, both for club and country.
