Nabil Fekir will get the opportunity to play in a World Cup final on Sunday.

Whether or not Didier Deschamps will call upon the Lyon midfielder against Croatia remains to be seen, but he's potentially just 90 minutes away from football's biggest prize.

His name is - of course - incredibly familiar to Liverpool fans after the events of the last month.

Reports suggest that Fekir has already undergone a photo shoot in the famous red jersey and even carried out a full interview with LFC TV before the collapse of his deal.

Kopites were flooding Twitter with the hashtag 'FekirFriday' only for a hesitation over the player's medical to throw a spanner in the works and end a deal.

Fekir deal went cold

The French club uploaded a statement afterwards, noting: "Olympique Lyonnais informs that the tripartite negotiations with the Liverpool club and Nabil Fekir for the transfer of the captain of OL have not succeeded."

That didn't necessarily spell the end for a Fekir-Liverpool deal but the arrival of the World Cup ensured negotiations turned cold.

And numerous reports throughout the tournament have suggested there could be a twist in the saga when France's campaign in Russia concludes.

Fekir's agreement with Lyon

It's a suspicion reiterated by the Mirror this week and it seems Fekir is very enthusiastic about fighting for the Liverpool move he came so close to last month.

The report reveals that Fekir has reached an agreement with Lyon that allows him to re-open negotiations with Liverpool at the very least.

Fekir has spoken to president Jean Michel Aulas - who has strong connections with the FFF - twice at the tournament and held sit-down talks after the victory over Belgium.

He made it clear to Aulas that he still wants a Liverpool move.

The Mirror understands that Liverpool aren't interested in reviving the deal on the old terms, but would re-enter negotiations if they could make minor changes to the deal.

So, it seems there's plenty of reasons to think Fekir could be a Liverpool player when the Premier League returns in August.

And if a problem emerges for a second time, it won't be down to Fekir himself who seems by all accounts desperate for a Liverpool move.

Now that Lyon have agreed to pave the way for new talks, both player and club could trash out a deal that suits all parties and doesn't collapse at the last minute.

It's been a tiring transfer saga but this could be exactly the breakthrough the deal needed.
