Featuring in the main event of a pay-per-view seems to be a much bigger deal now.
Perhaps most of the blame falls on Vince McMahon and Brock Lesnar, as the Universal Champion not featuring on programming has seen non-title bouts go on last time and time again.
Evidently, the WWE Championship match should always feature in the main event, even though that hasn't been the case for so many years.
Instead, it's Monday Night RAW that always seems to get the coveted main event spot, and it's not something a lot of fans are entirely pleased by.
For example, there was plenty of backlash towards Roman Reigns and Samoa Joe main eventing the appropriately-named Backlash pay-per-view.
There was online negativity, fans were booing in the arena and they even left early.
The fact that AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for the WWE title was on the line probably played a role in that.
Now, the focus is on Extreme Rules and the contest which is expected to main event.
According to several reports, the expectation is that The Big Dog and Bobby Lashley will feature in the final bout, even though there's no stipulation to the match which is the entire point of a gimmick event like Extreme Rules.
However, Rajah is now reporting that Lashley vs. Reigns isn't the direction some WWE officials want to go in when it comes to main eventing the final pay-per-view before SummerSlam.
Rather surprisingly, the WWE Championship match between The Phenomenal One and Rusev is receiving almost no support to feature in the main event.
Instead, some officials are reportedly pushing for Seth Rollins vs. Dolph Ziggler to end the show, but it seems likely that their wishes are going to be taken into consideration.
The Showoff and The Kingslayer are going to do battle in a 30-minute Ironman match for the Intercontinental Championship.
When you're talking about match quality, it's almost a given that both men are going to steal the show, especially when you consider that most of Rollins' recent matches have been produced by Tyson Kidd.
However, with the prospect of Lashley and Reigns going on to challenge Lesnar for the Universal crown, it seems unlikely that WWE will have that feature before Rollins vs. Ziggler.
