Stoke City's Xherdan Shaqiri looks set to join Liverpool in a £13.5m deal.

Jurgen Klopp was able to trigger Xhaqiri's cut-price release clause after Stoke were relegated to the Championship.

The 26-year-old Swiss international - who previously played for Bayern Munich and Inter Milan - was reportedly at Melwood on Friday to undergo his medical.

Shaqiri is being signed to provide competition for Liverpool's attacking places.

The frightening duo of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were starters on the wing but Liverpool lacked adequate back-up options.

In the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid, Klopp was forced to bring on Adam Lallana to replace the injured Salah.

Shaqiri notched eight goals and seven assists in the Premier League's worst club last season.

Carragher's brilliant post

Legendary Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher shared a humuorus post on Instagram after learning that Shaqiri was having his medical.

Carragher posted a photo with a man who has a similar body type to Shaqiri.

Carragher captioned it: "Delighted to help Xherdan Shaqiri with his @liverpoolfc medical. Looks ok to me! #liverpool #shaqiri"

Well played, Jamie. Although Shaqiri might not appreciate it as much as the Liverpool fans.

The highly-rated attacking midfielder is expected to become Liverpool's third signing of the summer.

Klopp has already welcomed new additions Naby Keita and Fabinho to pre-season training.

During ITV's World Cup coverage, Gary Neville labelled Shaqiri a "disgrace" for his role in Stoke's "unprofessional" season.

"I'm not a fan of Shaqiri to be honest with you," said the former Manchester United defender.

"I think that was, to be fair, worse by the fact that he distanced himself from his team-mates as Stoke.

"They were unprofessional last season, Stoke. There's no doubt, and he epitomised it."

Neville added: "He could score the goal of the tournament and he could have the most amazing game.

"But he could also be there for three matches, do nothing and just amble and wobble around.

"To be honest with you, with him, players like that I can't have. I struggle with it."
