England may never have a better chance of winning a World Cup on foreign soil than in Russia this summer. After progressing through a comfortable group in second, behind Belgium and ahead of Tunisia and Panama, the Three Lions’ potential run to the final looked like this: Colombia, Sweden and Croatia. But Gareth Southgate’s side fell at the final hurdle, losing 2-1 after extra-time to Croatia in the semi-final.But they came agonisingly close to just their second World Cup final.Kieran Trippier gave England a fifth-minute lead and, if they had made it 2-0 before half-time, it would surely have been game over. And the best chance - or chances - fell to Harry Kane.In the 30th-minute, the Spurs striker was presented a one-on-one opportunity with Danijel Subasic. Kane could have squared it to a free Raheem Sterling but he saw his effort parried by the goalkeeper. The ball fell back to the feet of Kane just a few yards out with just Domagoj Vida on the line to beat. However, Kane could only smash the ball against the post. How did he miss? But there’s new footage doing the rounds on social media that explains exactly how Kane missed from there.Slo-mo replays show Subasic actually got a tiny little toe on the ball, deflecting it onto the post.Without that touch, the ball definitely appeared to be heading towards the net.

SUBASIC MADE AN UNBELIEVABLE SAVE

What a save.

ENGLAND FANS HAVE ONLY JUST NOTICED IT

And three days later, loads of England fans are only just starting to realise that it was Subasic’s little touch that prevented England from going 2-0 ahead.

The assistant referee did raise his flag after the ball had gone out of play but replays showed that Kane was actually onside and the goal would have stood.

England were a toe nail away from a World Cup final…
