England were knocked out of the World Cup by Croatia on Wednesday night.Kieran Trippier had given England the lead within five minutes - and Gareth Southgate's side looked set to join France in Sunday's showpiece final. But Ivan Perisic scored an equaliser in the 68th minute and Mario Mandzukic netted a Croatian winner in extra time.It was a painful defeat for England. The Croats felt they were being underestimated by people in England in the build-up to the semi-final.Vedran Corluka stopped in the mixed zone after the game and had a message for the English. As per the Independent’s Miguel Delaney, Corluka simply smiled and said: ‘It’s not coming home!’ before continuing to walk away.

And football fans from around the world have accused England of being 'arrogant'.

Match of the Day host Gary Lineker responded to these suggestions with the perfect tweet on Saturday morning.

"Dear non English football fans," began Lineker.

"Football’s coming home is a fun song highlighting the lack of success of our football team for decades. No one really thought we’d win it.

"I totally get why you might think it was arrogance, but it’s more our self deprecatory sense of humour. 👍🏻"

Spot on, Gary - and another former England international, Rio Ferdinand, agreed.

England haven't reached a World Cup final since 1966.

They exceeded expectations in Russia this summer but fans will have to wait at least four more years for football to come home.

The Three Lions face Belgium in the third place play-off on Saturday afternoon and Southgate wants his team to bring home a medal.

“What we need to decide is who can go again physically," said the England manager.

"Everyone wants to play, but sometimes it is not a good decision to play if the energy is not right.

"It won’t be the same 11, but we want, ideally, to make as few changes as possible. We have a chance to win a medal at a World Cup, which only one other English team has ever done. And Belgium has beaten us already so we want to rectify that as well.”
