It was being widely reported that third-choice goalkeeper Danny Ward would be given his chance to stake a claim for Liverpool's number 1 shirt. The 25-year-old Welsh 'keeper has made just two Premier League appearances for Liverpool since joining from Wrexham in 2012.But, if reports are to be believed, Ward is expected to be given a genuine opportunity to become a starter at Anfield this season.Loris Karius ended the 2017/18 campaign as Jurgen Klopp's first-choice goalkeeper. However, he made two howlers in the Champions League final - and he was at fault again in last week's pre-season friendly win against Chester.Karius fumbled a simple free-kick to gift Chester a goal.Despite speculation that Ward would start, the under-fire German goalkeeper kept his place in Liverpool's starting XI for Saturday's pre-season friendly against Bury.

Liverpool explain Ward absence

The third-choice 'keeper wasn't even in the squad to face Bury and Liverpool explained why on their official website.

League Two Bury were thrashed 6-0 by Steven Gerrard's Rangers outfit last week.

Liverpool FC explained: "Loris Karius starts in goal, with the German likely to feature for the entire 90 minutes of today's game, rather than being subject to a half-time withdrawal.

"That decision has allowed Danny Ward to remain at Melwood in order to take part in a full training session - the Welshman is in line to play at Blackburn Rovers on Thursday."

Liverpool fans were miffed at Ward's unexpected absence but Blackburn are likely to provide a far sterner test for the inexperienced goalkeeper.

He will get his chance to prove himself later this week.

Xherdan Shaqiri joined from Stoke City on Friday and The Telegraph believe Klopp is still hoping to sign a new 'keeper.

They've been heavily linked with a move for Brazilian stopper Alisson Becker but Liverpool are reportedly unwilling to meet Roma's valuation.

Roma’s sporting director Monchi has been discussing Alisson's future this weekend.

“The will to sell Alisson depends on Roma," said Monchi, as per the Liverpool Echo.

“We always evaluate what comes in and decide for the good of Roma above all. I don’t want to talk about replacements, because Alisson hasn’t left. If that moment comes, we’ll think about it."
