Tommaso Ciampa is NXT's top heel right now.

In fact, he might just be the best bad guy in the whole of WWE - including those on SmackDown and RAW.

CIAMPA VS GARGANO

At last month's TakeOver: Chicago II pay-per-view, he continued his feud against longtime rival Johnny Gargano.

The pair have been at each other ever since Ciampa turned on his former DIY tag team partner in May 2017 - beating Johnny Wrestling down following their loss to The Authors of Pain.

In 2018, they've played out one of the most engrossing feuds in NXT history - headlining multiple TakeOver shows.

But for Ciampa, in particular, the road to the top of WWE's developmental brand has been a very long one.

TOMMASO'S WWE DEBUT

It was actually on this day (July 14) in 2005 that Ciampa made his WWE debut on an episode of SmackDown Live.

However, you certainly wouldn't be able to recognise him - as that night, he appeared as Thomas Whitney, ESQ - one of Muhammad Hassan's lawyers.

In his segment, Whitney was confronting The Undertaker and had to read out a statement from Hassan, only to take a chokeslam and tombstone piledriver from The Phenom.

Check out Ciampa's full 10-minute debut below.

That's a pretty cool way to make your wrestling debut - against one of the greatest of all time.

But when looking back on the 13th anniversary of his first appearance, Ciampa posted a tweet questioning if 'Taker himself knew who he was sharing the ring with.

"13 years ago, I made my WWE debut. I often wonder if Taker realized he was sharing the ring with The Greatest Sports Entertainer of All Time," he wrote.

You've got to admire Ciampa's confidence - and to be fair, he certainly has the potential to be one of WWE's future stars.

It's surely not long until he's called up to the main roster - hopefully around the same time as his rival Gargano is.

Because seeing those two go at it on SmackDown or RAW would be epic, in fact, it's pretty much a ready-made WrestleMania match.
