Wayne Rooney made his Major League Soccer debut on Saturday night. The 32-year-old former England international came off the bench in a 3-1 DC United win over Vancouver Whitecaps.Rooney, who is Manchester United's all-time top goalscorer, has admitted that he was unsure why Everton wanted him to leave the club this summer."I don't think it's a chip on my shoulder, I think it's a determination to win and to play," Rooney told ESPN ."I wanted to play, went back to Everton and had a year there, then as I've said before, Everton made it clear towards the end of the season that they'd be happy for me to leave."For whatever reason, I still don't know. I felt I was doing OK, I was top goal scorer [despite] playing most of the season from midfield."Rooney was introduced to the fans in DC United's matchday programme on Saturday.Kiran Moodley posted a photo on Twitter, in which DC supporters learned that "Rooney's greatest asset is his powerful right leg".It gets worse from there.

"Rooney has also been known to deceive goalkeepers by finessing shots across the goal line.”

It's fair to say that football terminology across the pond is very, very different.

Rooney was even described as 'slight' and football fans on Twitter found his introduction completely bizarre.

He's undoubtedly DC United's biggest ever signing and the fans were chanting: "We want Rooney! We want Rooney!"

DC manager Ben Olsen obliged and brought Rooney on in the 58th minute at Audi Field.

"The fans have been fantastic since I arrived in the airport, and then every day meeting fans out in city," said Rooney after the match, as per ESPN.

"And then today, as they were chanting, I was just as eager to get on pitch as they were to see me on the pitch."

Rooney bagged an assist and looked sharp on his MLS debut.
