Regardless of everything that's going on with Brock Lesnar's current contract storyline, it's evident that it's building towards an eventual clash against Roman Reigns.

Although it hasn't been confirmed on television yet, the feeling is that the Extreme Rules contest between The Big Dog and Bobby Lashley will determine who challenges The Beast next.

LASHLEY VS REIGNS

Considering Vince McMahon is adamant that Reigns will be the one that dethrones Lesnar to finally avenge his three losses, it's safe to assume that Reigns might walk out the winner.

However, that doesn't necessarily mean it's the correct decision.

Here are five reasons why Lashley - and not Reigns - should be the one that challenges Lesnar for the Universal Championship next.

MORE LEGITIMATE

Although Reigns is billed as a star who is believable enough to defeat Lesnar, on paper, nobody should be ahead of Lashley from the entire roster.

While he didn't face elite-level competition during his MMA days like Lesnar in the UFC, he still has an impressive MMA record - which means he can fight.

The fact is, Lesnar can't lose to just anybody on the roster. While Lashley might not be the most captivating of characters, his amateur wrestling background, as well as his MMA skills, means that nobody would bat an eyelid should he face and potentially dethrone Lesnar.

It's evident which type of names WWE considers as believable opponents. Kane, Samoa Joe, Reigns and Strowman - and realistically, Lashley should be ahead of them all on paper.

IT'S NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE

There's already plenty of dissent towards Lesnar's title reign, the last thing WWE will want is further backlash regarding the fact that The Beast has faced the same opponent over and over again.

He's faced Reigns three times, he's already beaten The Monster Among Men with one F5 while both Samoa Joe and Kane are on SmackDown LIVE - even they couldn't survive one F5.

It's about creating that shock value. It's an opportunity to dominate the headlines and bringing in Lashley from nowhere and defeating Lesnar in his first attempt would gain plenty of mainstream media attention.

There's clearly a story to tell there based on the two never meeting during their first stints in WWE, so it could finally be time for WWE to capitalise on that.

IT HELPS CEMENT LASHLEY AS A MAIN EVENT STAR

Right now, there's no telling what the immediate future holds for Lashley on RAW.

It wouldn't be a big surprise if he is to main event Extreme Rules with Reigns, but a loss doesn't necessarily mean he'll retain that level of importance.

We've seen WWE criminally misuse him recently during his questionable feud with Sami Zayn, and he clearly deserves so much better.

Instead, WWE could help him become a bona fide main event star should he defeat both Reigns and Lesnar. Effectively, he'd become a name that defeated the only two man that beat The Undertaker at WrestleMania.

While there are always going to be questions aimed at his microphone skills, Lashley has the look and the experience to nail down a main event spot and feature in some big storylines.

GETS EVEN MORE SYMPATHY FOR REIGNS

The long-term story Vince seemingly wants to tell is that nobody believes in Reigns - nobody but himself.

He doesn't have what it takes to beat Lesnar, management doesn't want him to become the champion and nobody thinks he can overcome that final hurdle.

Those are just some of the narratives that are told in the hope that fans will, one day, get behind Reigns where he can finally overcome the odds and be embraced by the WWE Universe.

The expectation is that Reigns will defeat Lesnar - so WWE could counter that again with a swerve by having Reigns failing when it matters the most again, which sees him lose out on yet another championship opportunity.

While it's clearly assuming a lot from the WWE fans, taking the longer route to the title could be more beneficial.

THE TITLE PICTURE BECOMES MORE WIDE OPEN

Monday Night RAW is in dire needs of Universal Championship contenders, it's as simple as that.

With Lesnar at the helm, it's more challenging to have anybody enter the title picture. With Reigns, more can join the conversation, but with Lashley, it would be a lot more wide open

It immediately throws Lashley into the title picture alongside Reigns, rather than just the latter. Then, there's also Strowman and his Money in the Bank briefcase, and we can finally have a fresh, competitive field with the title appearing more often.

For Vince, it's a big win as he probably won't mind having Lashley lose down the line, as opposed to Reigns.
