Mourinho on Perisic

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been working as a pundit for Russia Today.

Ahead of the World Cup final, the 55-year-old Portuguese coach spoke candidly about his failure to sign Perisic last summer.

Mourinho said frankly: "Perisic went from Croatia, goes to Dortmund, goes to Wolfsburg, goes to Inter - I don't know why he didn't come to Manchester when I wanted him."

Reports in the media suggested Ed Woodward was unwilling to meet Inter Milan's £48m valuation.

Perisic signed a new contract in September after failing to seal a move to Old Trafford.

Mourinho, who ended up signing Alexis Sanchez in January, had previously praised Perisic after Croatia's comeback win over England.

“Perisic is the kind of winger that is different to the others,” said Mourinho.

“Normally you look at wingers and they are just fast and creative. But he is also physical, very physical, fantastic in the air.”

Former Liverpool manager Graeme Souness believes Perisic would be a quality addition at Man United.

“I can see why Jose Mourinho is so keen to bring the Inter Milan midfielder to Old Trafford," wrote Souness in the Sunday Times.

“Manchester United would be a much improved side with him in their line-up.

“With his contribution against England when he scored one and had an assist, Perisic has now been involved in 10 goals at major tournaments for Croatia (six goals, four assists).

“That tells you plenty about his pedigree.”
