Nabil Fekir’s proposed transfer to Liverpool has grown into one of the sagas of the summer.

The move looked completely done and dusted on the eve of the World Cup, with the Frenchman even conducting interviews with the Anfield side in the famous Red shirt.

However, it all mysteriously fell apart in the final hour when Lyon president Jean Michael Aulas terminated negotiations and backed out of the deal.

The French side quickly released a statement confirming that negotiations had taken place, but that a deal could not be settled upon in the end.

And that was that.

While neither club has revealed what went so badly wrong in the end, there has been many a rumour that it had something to do with the results of Fekir’s medical.

The debacle came as a bit of a blow to Liverpool and their fans as it looked very much like a wonderfully exciting player had slipped through their fingers yet again.

After the signings of Fabinho from Monaco, and the arrival of Naby Keita this summer, the Anfield faithful saw Fekir as the ideal replacement for Brazilian Philippe Coutinho, who swapped Merseyside for Catalonia in January.

Fekir move could still be on

However, as the World Cup has rumbled on, rumours linking Fekir to Liverpool simply refused to go away and it is still widely believed that the Lyon captain will eventually sign for the Champions League runner-up.

And now, after recent comments from the Lyon president, that looks like even more of a possibility.

Speaking in an interview with le10sport, Aulas admitted that the transfer could still be on the cards.

“It seems to me that Liverpool could come back in.

“That’s what I’ve read in the press, but I’ve not been told anything.

“His transfer failed in June, but he hasn’t been affected by it. He is focused on the World Cup, and he still has his heart in Lyon.

“Nabil is much closer to Lyon today than he was when we talked to Liverpool.

“Maybe he will go to Liverpool, or another club, but if he stays at Lyon, it will be a great year for him and for us.”

It certainly seems that Fekir wants out of the French club, and having come within a signature of joining Jurgen Klopp’s in June, Fekir could push to reignite the move after he has completed his duties in Russia.

For now, he has the small matter of a World Cup final to focus on, but it will be worth watching this space in the aftermath of the global showpiece.

As hard as Lyon have tried to suggest it might be, this one is far from over.
