Juan Cuadrado will have known full well that his grasp on the No.7 shirt at Juventus was up as soon as the club signed Cristiano Ronaldo. The ‘CR7’ brand is huge, and there was simply no way that Cuadrado could keep hold of it.The Colombian graciously stepped aside, taking to Instagram to announce the switch.“It is better to give than to receive,” Cuadrado wrote while holding Ronaldo’s new shirt.“Blessings to Cristiano in this new adventure.”Pretty classy, that. Now all that’s left to determine is Cuadrado’s new number.

Cuadrado will wear 49

The 30-year-old decided to run a poll on Twitter, asking his followers to choose his number.

Four options were given - 10, 16, 21 or 49.

And while 10 or 16 may appear to be the more conventional number, 49 came out on top.

The reason why is really clever.

Cuadrado means ‘squared’ in Spanish - and seven squared is 49.

So while seven belongs to Ronaldo, it will still mean something to Cuadrado.

Cuadrado’s teammate Paulo Dybala urged the winger to take No.21 shirt, which he adorned before being given the No.10.

But there will be something nice about seeing 49 on Cuadrado’s shirt this season.

Ronaldo’s arrival will give fresh hope to Juventus’ attempts of ending their long wait to win the Champions League.

It’s been 22 years since the Italian giants last hoisted the trophy and in recent years they’ve lacked the final piece of the puzzle.

Juve were losers in both the 2015 and 2017 finals.

But in Ronaldo, a player who has won the Champions League in each of the past three seasons and five times in total, they have someone who may finally be able to get them over the line.

Mattia Perin, Emre Can and Joao Cancelo have also joined Juve this summer as Massimiliano Allegri prepares for another season in charge.

He’s won the Serie A and Coppa Italia in each of his four seasons at the helm but this time around, he's been given enough support to land the biggest trophy in club football.

With Ronaldo on board, there are no excuses.
