After a roller coaster month, the FIFA World Cup reached a dramatic climax in Russia on Sunday.

France were crowned the champions of the world for the second time in their history after doing away with plucky little Croatia 4-2 in the final.

Les Bleus were worthy winners in the end, having beaten the likes of Argentina, Uruguay, and Belgium to book their spot in the Moscow showpiece.

There will be an almighty party in Paris for the next few days as they celebrate one of the most famous days in the country’s proud footballing history.

After the heartache of 2006, the disaster of 2010, and the disappointment of 2014, you can hardly blame them for wanting to celebrate.

However, there will be a few people who won’t be quite as pleased with France’s victory.

Belgium can consider themselves very unlucky not to have made the final after showcasing some of the finest football at the tournament.

They simply couldn’t get past the French though, and many of the Belgium players were left with a sour taste in their mouth after some of France’s tactics on the night.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in particular, was far from impressed with the way the eventual champions conducted themselves.

“I would have preferred to have lost in the quarter-finals to Brazil, at least that was a team that wanted to play football. [France] are just an anti-football team,” said Courtois in the aftermath of his sides agonising defeat.

With that in mind, it comes as no surprise that big Thibaut turned off his television just before France claimed the ultimate victory in the final, refusing to watch his rivals celebrate.

“I watched the final, but I turned off my TV in the 94th minute, I didn’t want to see France celebrating their win,” he told Belgian outlet RTBF .

However, that proved to be a bit of a mistake because Courtois subsequently missed the announcement naming him as the best goalkeeper in the tournament.

In fact, it took a message from one of his friends before he even realised he had won the prestigious award.

“When my mates told me, I turned on the TV again and went back to it live,” he said.

Brilliant.

Imagine missing such a big announcement.

There were no arguments that Courtois deserved the award especially after Hugo Lloris’ howler in the final.

Now, focus will turn to Courtois' future at Chelsea, which has been cast into doubt after links with several clubs in the last few weeks.

Hopefully, he’ll have his telly on when they announce where he’ll be playing next season.
