France brought the curtain down on a thrilling World Cup on Sunday afternoon in Moscow.

Twenty years after captaining France to World Cup glory, Didier Deschamps guided his country to a 4-2 victory over Croatia in the final.

"My story is linked to that of the players," said the French boss.

"I had the immense privilege and happiness to experience that as a player 20 years ago, and it was in France as well so it will remain with me forever.

"But what they have done is just as big and just as beautiful."

Teenage sensation Kylian Mbappe won the FIFA Young Player award for his electric performances in Russia.

The 19-year-old PSG forward became the youngest goalscorer in a World Cup final since Pele.

L'Equipe publish best XI

Croatia and Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric was awarded the Golden Ball trophy after the 4-2 defeat on Sunday.

And French newspaper L'Equipe have compiled their team of the tournament.

Four Frenchmen, three Belgians, one Brazilian, one Englishman, one Uruguayan and one Croatian.

It's a pretty strong XI but there is one omission that could raise eyebrows.

N'Golo Kante is unlikely to complain but the energetic 27-year-old was brilliant alongside Paul Pogba in the heart of France's midfield.

Match of the Day host Gary Lineker reserved special praise for Kante, suggesting the Chelsea man was the best player in Russia.

“For me, N’Golo has been the best player at the World Cup,” Lineker told L’Equipe. “He’s not really the type of guy we speak about or try to push forward as a star.

“With Kante, France play with 12 men. He counts as two midfielders on his own. He’s everywhere.

“His quality of pass is excellent and he can break the lines. He’s able to push the ball forwards."

The next World Cup is set to take place in Qatar in November 2022.

It's been plagued by controversy almost since the moment it was announced

Qatar's World Cup bidding process was investigated by the FBI and Swiss authorities on allegations of corruption and bribery, and preparations have also been overshadowed by issues surrounding migrant workers' rights.
